I am a drummer, composer and radio Dj from Birmingham in the UK, currently studying at Berklee College of Music.
Very ironically I started out as a flautist; possibly one of the easiest instruments to set up and transport. After having lessons, that were provided by my primary school, my Mum decided to take me to a weekly community music school where I persued lessons in both flute and piano. It was around this time that I attended a percussion workshop and that was pretty much the beginning. Quite soon after that, my Mum bought my Dad a drum kit, which I took delight in helping him open and set up. Just like that. . . I wanted to be a drummer.
I have a theory that everyone has an instrument that matches their demeanour and personality. From a very young age, music has been at the heart of everything I have done. Playing the drums simply felt like a natural extension of me as a person and my personality. There is nothing quite like that feeling of absolutely finding that groove, that pocket, and just letting it simmer or the furious exchange of ideas in the middle of someone’s solo. For me, drumming is about being part of a collective group all aiming for a common goal.
By the age of 10, I was attending as many concerts and shows that my Mum could possibly take me to. At one of these shows, I had the unexpected opportunity to meet Mr Andy Hamilton, a veteran Saxophonist based in Birmingham, who introduced me to a local community big band called the Notebenders, with whom I performed regularly with for nearly 10 years.
During the summer of 2016, after taking part in the Berklee Valencia Summer Program, I was selected to audition for Berklee College of Music, Boston. I was awarded a part-scholarship to continue my studies at the Boston Campus. After completing two years at Birmingham Conservatoire and taking a year out to travel and tour, I started at Berklee for Fall 2017. Since enrolling at Berklee and studying for 5 semesters, I have had the fantastic fortune and opportunity to travel around the world through music. I've had the great honour and joy to perform around Europe and the US with many people, including Courtney Pine, Billy Childs, Soweto Kinch and more, as well as lead my own bands and projects with many of my peers and friends.
As well as performing and touring, I have also been particularly instrumental in the music business, mostly in programming, producing, management and touring. I have been the Backstage Manager for Love Supreme Festival for the last four years consecutively and have tour managed and advised for multiple groups and artists. Through this type of work, I have had the great fortune to work with artists and groups such as The Bad Plus, Theo Croker, Robert Glasper and more, which required a lot of advance work and dealing with contracts and programming. Furthermore I have booked countless shows for my own projects both nationally in the UK and internationally taking my project around Europe and to Norway. As a self-managed musician and band, I held three residencies in the UK, produced around 10 live concerts per month, as well as stage managing some too.
Music has allowed me to do and experience some pretty awesome things and I hope that you will continue to join me and support me in this beautiful journey.
